The residents of Royal Gardens Estate in Ajah, Lagos, have had their electricity disconnected by the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) over management’s failure to remit payments.

EQToday learned that Royal Gardens Estate is managed by Trojan Estates, where residents pay high service charges and utility bills, including electricity, to the estate management.

The estate management also supplies water to the residents and prohibits them from drilling boreholes for their personal use. With the blackout, the estate management is unable to pump water for residents’ use, thus affecting the supply of water.

EQToday learned that the estate is experiencing this blackout as a result of the debt the management owes the EKEDC.

According to an electricity disconnection notice issued by the disco to the estate on May 15, the estate owes a sum of N462,035,250.

Before carrying out the disconnection on Sunday, the disco warned that failure to pay the current charge of N184,769,981.25 and part of the outstanding arrears of N241,265,269.25 would result in a disruption of electricity in the estate.

One of the residents, who does not wish to be named, told EQToday that the management received electricity payments but refused to remit them to the disco.

“They are corrupt. We pay our high service charges, but the estate management does not remit to the EKEDC. They also control our electricity and water,” said the resident.

“There has been a water shortage. I have not been able to shower. I cannot do anything. I cannot even cook. I could not go to the office because I could not shower.”

Another resident told EQToday that this was a slap on the face of the estate, as the estate had always enjoyed stable electricity.

“We had always enjoyed stable electricity. The few times electricity supply was disrupted were either as a result of the national grid collapse or a heavy rainfall, which was always rare,” she said.

EQToday emailed the estate’s management for comments on Friday, but there’s no response yet.
