The owner of the Chinese supermarket that went viral in April for prohibiting Nigerians from shopping on its premises, located in the the China General Chamber of Commerce, Abuja, has relocated to another location, EQToday has been told.

When EQToday visited the premises on June 1, five security operatives who were reluctant to answer questions manned the gate and questioned non-residents who tried to gain entry into the estate.

One of the security operatives whose name tag was not visible stated that the supermarket was still under lock and key, and the owner of the store, who is a tenant, has since relocated out of the premises.

“The supermarket is currently under lock by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC); I guess you are here because of what you read online. The owner of the supermarket has left the estate premises and the store is no longer in operation,” he told EQToday.

“Besides, it is not a supermarket, contrary to what is circulating online; this person only decided to open a store for her Chinese nationals. But ever since the news broke, she has had to vacate the estate and move elsewhere. No one operates any business here now.”

EQToday noted that the security operatives responses were in disparity with what was verified by media organisations here and here online.

THE BACK STORY

On April 20, videos of an Abuja resident who said a supermarket in the Federal Capital Territory ((FCT) was prohibiting Nigerians from shopping went viral.

“There is this supermarket I saw online. It is a Chinese supermarket. They have Chinese stuff inside, food, ramen and all of that,” the user had said.

“So, I wanted to go in and check it out and at the gate, the security people told me that the supermarket is strictly for Chinese people. If you are a Nigerian, you can’t go inside or buy anything.”

A security operative who was on the premises while some Nigerians visited to verify the claim said Nigerians were restricted from accessing the premises from January.

However, some online influencers claim that the store wasn’t a supermarket and was meant to only serve residents of the Royal Choice Estate.
