Akinkunmi Oke, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Area F Police Command in Lagos State, has ordered the detention of five policemen who extorted N72,000 from Bobby Ogbolu, an actor.
In a telephone conversation with FIJ on Saturday, Oke said he read the newspaper’s report on the incident and called Adeola Adeoye, the station’s supervising officer, to confirm. Upon confirmation, he ordered the team’s disbandment and detention.
FIJ had detailed how five policemen, in the wee hours of Wednesday morning, arrested Ogbolu and three others in Ikeja, the state capital, detained them and only released them after collecting N72,000.
The policemen returned the money in cash to the actor after this reporter went with him to demand a refund.

Reacting on Saturday, Oke said, “I just saw the story on X (formerly Twitter) this morning and called the SO to update me on the matter. He told me he had handled it and settled things, but I said he should have told me, regardless.
“Right now, I have ordered the detention of the policemen involved and disbanded that team.”
When FIJ asked if there were any guarantees a repeat would not occur, Oke said he had put his phone number in front of the station for anyone to report excesses of the men he was supervising. For the ones culpable in Wednesday’s incident, he said, “I will ensure I keep them off the roads.”
Oke said he was not at the station on Saturday and was not there on Wednesday, but he promised to follow up when he returned to physical duty.
