The Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) has yet to help Damilare Abiodun Atobatele, an Ibadan-based businessman, recover N1.8 million from the N2.5 million used for unauthorised online purchases on his account.

Four days after FIJ published a report detailing how the Ibadan-based businessman lost N2.5 million saved in his GT Bank account in June, the bank returned N700,000 to him.

Atobatele has been visiting a GTB branch in Ibadan to get his bank to assist him in recovering the N1.8 million balance, but nothing has been done to that effect.

On November 8, 2023, the sum of N2.5 million was moved from Atobatele’s savings account to his current account and eventually used for online purchases via Paystack without his authorisation.

When he went to lodge complaints at the bank, the staff member who attended to him said the transactions were done using his ATM card details. He found this absurd because he had his ATM card with him at the time.

Atobatele changed his ATM card that day, hoping that would be the end of the unauthorised transactions in his bank accounts.

But it did not end there.

Again, on November 15, Atobatele received debit alerts notifying him of multiple transactions totaling N950,000 on his account. He consulted his bank on multiple occasions, but nothing was done until FIJ published a report on the case on June 12 and N700,000 was refunded.

He told FIJ that the staff member who attended to him said they were working on his refund but he had not heard from them since then.

“I have not heard from GTB since they refunded N700,000 out of the N2.5 million that left my account. They have not refunded the balance. They told me they were working on it when I visited the bank, but nothing has been done. I don’t understand what the bank is doing again,” he told FIJ.

When this reporter emailed GT Bank on Friday, Latifat Folarin, a customer care representative with the bank, asked for Atobatele’s account details, but nothing was done over 48 hours later.
