National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in Lagos State have told FIJ that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu did not pay them N100,000 as state allowance in July.

This clarification comes a few days after numerous posts on social media claimed the governor paid corps members a huge state allowance.

These pieces of misinformation from Thursday, written like news, remain online.

The state allowance remains N15,000 and not all corps members serving in Lagos are entitled to this allowance.

Olayide Soaga, a corps member serving as a newspaper intern, said that the N100,000 was a one-off gift to Lagos NYSC Batch B1 corps members.

“No, it was giveaway funds. That occasion was just a one-time thing,” she explained on Sunday.

“Lagos corps members do not receive state allowance. The money was only for Lagos NYSC Batch B1 corps members who were in camp at the time.”

Timilehin Akinmoyeje, another active Lagos corps member, clarified that only corps members working directly with the state government received N15,000 from it as a monthly allowance.

“Corp members that work for Lagos State Government receive N15,000 monthly, I think. This is in addition to the NYSC N33,000 allowance every corps member receives,” Akinmoyeje said.

“That is strictly for people that work for the state government’s ministries, departments or agencies. That N100,000 was just a giveaway on a whim, maybe. Maybe not. It’s not the usual. Not the standard.”

Sanwo-Olu, when announcing his intention to pay the corps members on July 26, said that the money was a token of appreciation.

President Bola Tinubu and labour union leaders agreed to peg the new minimum wage at N70,000 this month. Nigerian state governors previously said they were unable to pay N60,000 as a minimum wage in June.

Despite Tinubu’s approval, state governors are yet to announce their implementation of N70,000 minimum wage.
