Yomi Ayantunde (pseudonym), a post-graduate student living in Lagos, paid N45,165.03 in utility fees to Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) in December through Quickteller. The DisCo said they didn’t receive the money, but Quickteller has delayed rectifying the transaction.

Ayantunde told FIJ that he had recently acquired his prepaid meter, and he got 200 units free for the first month after which he was to make a payment of N45,165.03 to Ikeja Electric.

“To make that payment, when I contacted Ikeja Electric, I was given the instruction to pay through the Quickteller app,” Ayantunde told FIJ.

“When I made the payment, the money didn’t go through while I used my card. They refunded me immediately. To avoid being debited the second time, I decided to make a transfer because there was the option of paying through a transfer and card.

“I clicked on the Quickteller bank transfer option, the Wema bank account was displayed and I paid.”

When Ayantunde contacted Ikeja Electric, they told him they were yet to receive the money. He then decided to contact GT Bank, the bank he made the payment from.

Ayantunde told FIJ that despite visiting GT Bank numerous times, they consistently told him that there were no issues in the transaction from their end. In fact, the bank provided a printout of the transaction to prove that the money left his account.

He also visited Wema Bank, but the bank’s staff he met said he could not make a complaint since he was not their customer. Quickteller has only offered Ayantunde automated responses.

“They told me that it was Quickteller (that) could contact them,” Ayantunde said as he recalled what the Wema staff told him.

“Quickteller has made no effort to resolve the issue. They keep sending me responses as if it were from a robot. It comes specifically on Mondays and Fridays. It’s been like that for the past three months.”

FIJ sent an email to Quickteller on Monday but they were yet to respond at press time.
