Omoyele Sowore, activist and the publisher of Sahara Reporters, who was detained on Wednesday, has been moved to an underground detention facility.
Sowore’s staff shared updates and concerns about his health on his social media accounts. On Thursday, Sowore’s social accounts stated that he had been manhandled and his hand was broken while he was being moved to the underground detention facility.
FIJ reported the activist’s detention on Wednesday. He had honoured and invitation from the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja.
Sowore arrived at the Force Headquarters at about noon with a travel bag and was soon taken into custody by the Force Intelligence Department (FID).

A police team transferred Sowore from the FID to an undisclosed location around 6 am.

FIJ earlier reported that a police letter initially accused Sowore of “inciting disturbance”, but a new letter issued to his lawyer on Monday replaced the accusation with allegations of forgery and criminal defamation.

Amnesty International, a civil society group, condemned Sowore’s arrest and called for his immediate and unconditional release on Wednesday.
Muyiwa Adejobi, spokesperson for the police force, was unreachable on Thursday. Calls to his phone went unanswered, and messages sent via WhatsApp and SMS had received no response at press time.
At the time of publishing this report, neither Adejobi nor the official handle of the police force had issued a statement regarding Sowore’s detention.
