Israel Adebiyi, a student of Crowe Schools International in Iwo, Osun State, has passed his English Language subject with grade point C5 after the Nigerian office of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) re-evaluated the exam results.
FIJ had earlier reported how Adebiyi, like many of his counterparts in Osun State, got unusually poor grades in the subject, which WAEC had forced them to write on the night of May 28.
The examination body claimed that the delay was caused by its intentional action of preventing suspected question leakages and unapproved conduct among students.

Following pushbacks by the media, candidates and parents, WAEC admitted on Thursday that there were errors in the result and immediately shut down the result portal for re-evaluation.
The re-evaluation was concluded within the 24-hour timeframe promised by the organisation, and new results began trickling in.
FIJ confirmed from school owners contacted for the earlier story that their candidates’ results had improved.
“Some got C5, C6 and some B3,” said Alli Adetayo, director of Crowe Schools.
“We are happy that our voice has been heard. Our students and their parents are in a better frame of mind now.”

English Language is a critical subject for students seeking to study at higher institutions, regardless of their choice of studies.

WAEC had revealed on Monday that 38.32% of its 1,969,313 candidates passed English. Following the resolution of what it vaguely called a “technical glitch”, however, the figure jumped to 62.96%, which translates to an addition of 24.64%.
Apologising to candidates and the nation at large on Friday, Amos Dagu, WAEC country head, said, “With deep sorrow and regret, I, on behalf of the Registrar to Council, Management and Staff of WAEC Nigeria, apologise for the discrepancies discovered in the grading of serialised papers. This is very difficult for us to say, but we have to admit that it is very embarrassing.”
