The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of Michael Tobiloba Adaramoye (aka Lenin), one of the conveners of the nationwide #EndBadGovernance protest, and nine others in prison following charges of treason, an offnce punishable with death, brought against them.

Justice Emeka Nwite, who gave the order on Monday, said the protesters should be incarcerated at the Kuje Correctional Centre and the Suleja Correctional Centre. Prosecutors claim that the protesters planned to overthrow the federal government.

The judge had ordered the protesters’ detention after Simon Lough, the prosecutor, opposed bail applications even though the 10 defendants had pleaded not guilty to all six charges filed against them by the Nigerian police.

Deji Adeyanju, a lawyer for two defendants, argued that they were not criminals and would not jump bail if their applications were granted.

However, Justice Nwite ordered their remand until September 11 when the ruling on their case would be heard.

FIJ on August 11 reported how 28-year-old Adaramoye went missing after he was abducted on the orders of the National Security Agency (NSA) on August 5.

Adaramoye was abducted from his home alongside two other people and they were all taken to the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

Other people the court ordered to be remanded were Adeyemi Abiodun Abayomi (Yomi), 34 years old; Suleiman Yakubu, 28 years old; Opaluwa Eleojo Simeon, 50 years old; and 51-year-old Angel Love Innocent (the only female among them).

The #EndBadGovernance protest took place between August 1 and August 10. It was a nationwide protest against economic hardship stemming from President Bola Tinubu’s policies.
