Dana Air, a Nigerian airline, has refunded N274,690 to Bunmi Omotesho, a civil servant living in Abuja, whose tickets were cancelled in April following a suspension of the airline’s operations.

Omotesho confirmed the refund to FIJ on Wednesday, three days after FIJ published a report about her case adding to the airline’s growing list of unresolved cases.

“Good afternoon, FIJ. Dana Air has just refunded me now. Thank you so much, FIJ,” Omotesho wrote.

FIJ reported on Sunday, how the airline had withheld Omotesho’s refund after she paid N274,690 for tickets for herself and three other relatives. They were scheduled to travel from Lagos to Abuja on May 12.

The civil servant had purchased the tickets on April 18 but, exactly one week after, Dana Airline’s Air Operator Certificate (AOC) was suspended by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

This was after its aircraft, marked McDonnell Douglas (MD-83) with registration number 5N-BKI, skidded off the runway at the domestic wing of Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

Before FIJ intervened, Omotesho had written to the airline but she said they stopped responding to her emails.

Kingsley Ezenwa, Dana Air’s communication consultant, told FIJ on Wednesday that the airline was working towards resolving all its backlogs. He attributed the delay in refunds to the aviation company’s reduced staff strength.

“The task five people would usually perform is now being carried out by one person. The work is slower but everyone will get their refund,” Ezenwa told FIJ.

Ezenwa also said that the refunds were not limited to customers whose tickets were cancelled by the airline after their AOC was suspended, but included customers expecting refunds from them before the suspension.
