Favour Ofili, a Nigerian athlete, has expressed her frustration after being omitted from the 100 metres at the ongoing Olympic Games in Paris because the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) and the Athletic Federation of Nigeria (AFN) failed to register her for the event.

She said this on Tuesday night on X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram, lamenting that her four-year preparations for the Olympic Games have come to nought owing to the AFN and NOC’s sloppiness.

“It is with great regret that I have just been told I will not be competing in the 100 metres at these Olympic Games. I qualified, but those with the AFN and NOC failed to enter me. I have worked for 4 years to earn this opportunity. For what?” Ofili asked on X.

Expressing her frustration in subsequent tweets, she said she also failed to participate in the last Olympic Games because the AFN, NOC, and National Anti-Doping Committee (NADC) failed to release funds for athletes to be tested.

“Please remember, in the last Olympic Games I was not able to compete because AFN, NADC, and NOC failed to release funds for athletes to be tested, which made 14 Nigerian athletes qualified not to compete. Now this,” she said.

“If those responsible are not held accountable for taking this opportunity from me, neither organisation can ever be trusted in the future! The next one is the 200 meters. I hope I’m entered.”

Last March, Ofili set a new African 200m record at the 2023 NCAA Indoor Championships, winning her heat with a time of 22.11 seconds. On May 18, she debuted at the Adidas City Games in Atlanta, where she broke the African 150m record with a run time of 16.30 seconds in her first attempt at the distance.

Additionally, she surpassed Amantle Montsho’s 14-year-old 300m African record of 36.33 seconds at the women’s 300m race during the 2024 New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston, clocking 35.99 seconds.

When FIJ contacted the Athletics Federation of Nigeria via email, they did not respond at press time. FIJ also called Rosa Mosindi, the secretary general of the Nigerian Olympic Committee, but got no response. She had not responded to the text sent to her phone at press time.
