Access Bank has lifted the restriction on the travel account of Ade Yusuf (real name withheld), a Canada-based Nigerian, that had been in place since April.
Yusuf’s account was unblocked on Monday, one day after FIJ published a report detailing how the bank had told him the restriction would remain until his return to Nigeria.
“Good news, Access bank finally removed the restriction on my account. Thank you so very much,” Yusuf wrote to FIJ on Tuesday morning.

Yusuf had earlier told FIJ that he had asked Access Bank to place a Post No Debit (PND) on his naira account after his phone was stolen in April. But unknown to him, the bank restricted his travel account as well.
FIJ learned that he was still in Nigeria at the time. When he visited a branch of the bank in Wuse, Abuja, to request access to his account that same April, only his naira account was unblocked.
He said he would have asked the bank to equally unblock his travel account had he known that it was restricted alongside his naira account.

He didn’t learn about the restriction until he had travelled to Canada and was unable to withdraw from his travel account in May.
The bank also told him he would have to return to Nigeria for the issue to be resolved.
Yusuf, who was frustrated by the setback caused by the restricted account, reached out to FIJ, and a report was published on Sunday.
He told FIJ that a customer care agent of the bank contacted him on Monday morning, asking him to send a handwritten request to unblock the account. “I have done that again, hoping for a positive response,” Yusuf said.
Later in the day, the bank emailed him to reveal that his account issue had been reviewed and it was now active.
“After they informed me, I confirmed with an ATM withdrawal,” he added.
