The Area N Police Command in Ijede, Ikorodu, Lagos State, has returned N34,000 its officers stole on Wednesday from Daniel Ajiboye, a resident.

Ajiboye visited the station on Friday morning and met the Area Crime Officer who told him he had heard of the matter after FIJ’s story.

There, he explained that FIJ called the Area Commander, and the commander told him to show up in person to recover his money.

In a telephone conversation, the Crime Officer explained to FIJ that he had detained the errant policemen and they will stand trial for their actions.

“I recovered the money last night,” he explained. “The men are already in custody and will face trial.”

Ajiboye also told FIJ that he wrote a statement detailing how the police stopped him on Wednesday because he had a locally-produced bar soap in his possession. This soap, he said, was for his pregnant wife, but the police detained him at gunpoint for five hours before taking all the money he had in his bank account — N34,000.

“Thank you very much, sir,” he said after making the statement and recovering his money. “They attended to me and promised to make them face disciplinary actions.”

FIJ has reported several cases of police extortion and abuse of power, and more often than not, the victims get their funds back.

However, many errant policemen walk free when their accusers do not return to file official complaints with the Force.
