Michael Onuche (not real name) said on Thursday that Unity Bank had paid him N252,565 in owed commissions due to FIJ’s reportage.

In an FIJ story on Monday, Onuche said he used to work for Unity Bank as a marketer in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. But after his resignation in February, his commissions were not paid despite his numerous emails to the bank.

With documented evidence, FIJ confirmed that Onuche met his monthly target in June, August, September, October and December 2023.

Three days after FIJ’s story, Unity Bank summoned Onuche for clarifications on how he calculated his N3.7 million commission.

“When I got there, I didn’t know they had arranged for a meeting between me, the branch manager and the people at the head office in Lagos. It was an online conference call,” Onuche explained.

“They asked me to give them a breakdown of how I got my figure. But when I did, they said that was not how they calculated their commission.

“I know the calculation was not in the offer letter, but I know it is the tradition that all banks do.

“I told them that most of my friends had benefited from it, so why should my own be different?”

Onuche told FIJ that his former bank manager, who was also part of the virtual meeting, told him that his entitlement was N252,000.

“They told me that the ratio is 0.02 percent,” Onuche said. But when he told them that that rate should amount to N2.5 million, they told him they would still have to divide the money by 10.

“I told them that even though my offer letter does not specify the amount I should be getting, it was what my supervisor told me then. When I asked others how the ratio was calculated, they were not specific, they said they just receive credit alert,” Onuche told FIJ.

“After they stated everything, they said they were going to pay me the commission they had calculated. They said that once they pay the commission, I should make sure that I remove that publication online.”

Onuche told FIJ that he did not protest the bank’s decision due to how their silence had made him grow pessimistic about even getting a dime from them in the first place.

“I was surprised that they even said they would pay, so I decided not to drag it again,” he told FIJ.
