Ushie Rita Uguamaye, the corps member who became an Internet sensation after she complained about economic hardship under the President Bola Tinubu-led administration, did not get her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge certificate.
The NYSC discharge certificate is awarded to Nigerian graduates who have completed the one-year mandatory programme.
The corps member, popularly known as Raye, who announced this development in an Instagram post on Saturday, said, “I did not get my NYSC certificate today after one year of serving this country. I literary went there with my cohort, the people we served together, and when it got to my turn, they said no certificate for you.”
Along with her video post on Instagram was a caption that revealed NYSC refused to issue the discharge certificate because she did not do her clearance for April at the scheduled time.

Raye described the NYSC’s reason as dishonest, explaining that she had presented herself for clearance at the time, but her Local Government Inspector (LGI) refused to clear her and seized her file.
She wrote:
“After 1 year of moving to another man’s land, to serve my country, ended with no certificate and telling me to come for final verdict that we already know how it’ll end.
“I genuinely wish I wasn’t a Lagos state Corper because it’s a waste of my time. I can’t say moving here was bad but serving here isn’t all pleasure.
“Just to add to it, they said the reason I’m not getting my certificate is because I didn’t clear myself for the month of April on my scheduled date. But what they aren’t saying is how I was present to get cleared, yet the LgI kept asking me to go to the back, and when she finally wanted to attend to me, she said she wouldn’t clear me.
“She seized my file and told me to get out. This is a long story, and I don’t mind waking up at midnight to tell the story. The deep-rooted anger I feel and hatred is crazy because I don’t know who to direct it to.
“But I wish myself the best. And I’m closing this chapter.”

BACKGROUND
Raye had voiced her struggles and frustrations about Nigeria’s economic hardship under President Bola Tinubu in March.
The corps member later raised the alarm in another video, saying that NYSC officials were threatening her because of the viral clip. They wanted her to delete it.
When it seemed as though the matter had died down, her LGI summoned her to appear at the Eti-Osa Local Government office. This was the local government area where her Place of Primary Assignment (PPA) was located.
In June, FIJ reported that she would likely be punished with two extra months, even though she’s supposed to complete her service year in July.
When reports of the two-month extension of her service year headlined the news in June, NYSC denied the claim, saying it was untrue.
However, Segun Ojienoh, one of the lawyers representing the corps member, told FIJ that NYSC was lying through its teeth, as he had it on good authority that her service year was indeed extended.
One month and a few days later, the corps member was denied her discharge certificate.
