The Super Eagles representing Nigeria in the ongoing 2025 AFCON qualifiers have announced plans to return home after reporting the poor treatments meted out to them by Libyan airport officials between Sunday night and Monday morning, FIJ can report.

Promise Esoghe, the Super Eagles’ Media Officer, relayed this information to FIJ via a message on WhatsApp on Monday afternoon.

“Team cleared to Al Abraq in an hour,” wrote Esoghe.

A recent post by William Troost-Ekong, the captain of the Nigerian Super Eagles, also confirmed this.

At 1:07 pm on Monday, Troost-Ekong shared on X that their plane was being fueled and the team would be leaving for Nigeria.

Power of social media. Apparently our plane is being fueled as we speak and we should be leaving to Nigeria shortly. Thanks for everyone’s support! 🇳🇬 I REITERATE: We would NEVER treat a guest nation for a game in this way. Mistakes happen, delays happen. But never on purpose!— William Troost-Ekong (M.O.N) (@WTroostEkong) October 14, 2024

“Power of social media. Apparently, our plane is being fueled as we speak and we should be leaving for Nigeria shortly. Thanks for everyone’s support. I reiterate: we would never treat a guest nation for a game in this way. Mistakes happen, delays happen but never on purpose!,” his post read.

FIJ had reported how the footballers complained about the Libyan authorities maltreating them. The football team was meant to represent Nigeria in an African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers match.

The Super Eagles landed at the Al-Abraq Airport, Libya, for the second leg of their match against Libya scheduled for Tuesday only to be delayed for over 12 hours.
