The Lagos State Police Command has claimed it transferred the case of Owolabi Akinolu, a policeman accused of raping a 17-year-old girl in his office, to the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) headquarters in Abuja.

Benjamin Hundeyin, Lagos Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), confirmed on Wednesday morning via X that he spoke with Sahara Reporters about the matter.

According to the newspaper, Hundeyin said the state command had concluded its investigation into the claims against 56-year-old Akinolu, and forwarded it to the headquarters in Abuja.

“The Suspect’s Disciplinary Report has been forwarded to the force headquarters for further necessary action. We await feedback. Kindly note that a serving police officer cannot be prosecuted unless he or she has first been dismissed from service,” they credited Hundeyin with saying.

The development came one week after FIJ reported that the police kept mum on the investigation one month after promising to probe the matter.

On Monday, Muyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer, took to X to demand that Hundeyin provide an update on the matter.

A teenager accused Akinolu of raping her when he invited her to his office in early June. Robbers had earlier stolen her phone but, claiming to have caught the robbers, the policeman lured her to the Area H Command where she said he sexually abused her.
