Several Nigerians extorted during the course of obtaining police character certificates (PCC) have shared details of their experiences.

On the heels of FIJ’s undercover exposé of policemen collecting money to issue certificates without biometric checks, these sources have shared how their desperation was taken advantage of when they appeared for mandatory biometric checks.

FIJ spent eight months gathering intel and probing the Federal Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Abuja. During this endeavour, the newspaper was able to obtain a PCC for a prison inmate and establish fraud.

Two years earlier, the police introduced the Police Specialised Services Automation Project (POSSAP), an online platform to ease application processes and reduce the need for human contact.

Despite this, several policemen continue to take advantage of biometrics to illegally take money from applicants.

Speaking with FIJ, Samuel Nnamdi said, “I started the process in July, and the police officers doing the capturing were collecting N10,000 cash. The certificate is usually ready within 24 hours or less.”

John Olatunde agreed with this position. He said, “They charged me N10,000 too in Abuja last year for capturing. Nigeria is a wild place. Even the police are scamming the citizens.”

It was the same experience for Oscar Yagazierem. He said, “I paid N30,000 online and paid N5,000 cash at Ogun State CID. They called it service fee.”

On Friday evening, Muyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), told FIJ the Police Force was investigating FIJ’s findings and he would make a public statement on it soon.
