An unnamed young man was killed by a train in the Jibowu area of Yaba, Lagos, on Friday morning.

A resident in the area named Adura, who also witnessed the accident, told FIJ that the incident occurred at about 8 a.m. on Friday after efforts by bystanders to get the deceased off the tracks failed.

Adura explained that the man was sitting by the edge of the tracks the train was travelling on but ignored warnings from people trying to alert him to the approaching train.

“A student even nudged him to warn him about the oncoming train, and people were shouting before it got close, but he still wouldn’t move. I can’t say for sure if he committed suicide, but he was obsessively pressing his phone,” Adura told FIJ.

Another eyewitness told FIJ that he knew the deceased as a tyre repairman and confirmed he was mentally stable. However, the witness could not confirm if the man was under the influence of drugs at the time.

Officers from the Alakara Police Station in Mushin and a Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) official were at the scene.

Speaking to FIJ, CSP Enyinna Nwankudu, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Alakara Police Station, said he was notified of the incident and, although it wasn’t exactly within his jurisdiction, he felt the need to respond.

“We’ve informed the railway authorities and LASEMA, who will come to remove the body,” he told FIJ.

This is the second incident in six days of a train killing someone in the area. On Sunday, FIJ reported the death of a middle-aged woman with mental health challenges under similar circumstances.
