Onyekachi Nwachukwu, a 39-year-old man in Owerri, Imo State, has narrated how police officers from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) broke into his house in Umuaghara Obibi Nguru, Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area, and arrested him and his 10-year-old son over a marital feud still in court.
Nwachukwu told FIJ that, as a result of the manner of his arrest, his aged mother, who resides in the same house as him, has been having several panic attacks.
He said that five policemen from the state CID jumped the fence to his house and broke into his apartment at 5 am on June 21, arrested him and his 10-year-old son and kept them in custody until they were bailed.
According to Nwachukwu, his family did not know where he was the day he was arrested until he called his brother, who paid the N100,000 bail the police requested.

Nwachukwu said that in custody, he realised that his estranged wife had summoned the police to intimidate him to get custody of their 10-year-old child, whom she abandoned eight years earlier.
He said that after their marriage hit the rocks due to financial difficulties in 2016, his wife went her own way and left their two-year-old son, whom he’d been taking care of until she showed up this year.
According to Nwachukwu, his estranged wife visited him sometime this year to take custody of the child, but he refused, and this got her offended.
“My estranged wife reported to the welfare unit in Owerri, but their response was unfavourable, so she took the matter to a customary court in Owerri,” Nwachukwu told FIJ.

“While the case she filed herself is still on, she went to the state CID in Owerri because she had a premonition she would lose the case. The court has sat only once because she’s not patient.
“Some two weeks ago, the police came to my house and arrested my son and me. And since my release, I have been invited several times by the police.”
When FIJ called Okoye Henry, the Imo State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), for comments, he asked this reporter to detail the matter in a text. But at press time, he had not responded to the text sent to him on WhatsApp.
