The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have refused to confirm the camp allowance payment of the women’s national football team, Super Falcons, in their actual US dollar value.

Osasu Obayiuwana, a lawyer, journalist and Africa analyst at Al Jazeera, made this known in an X post on Sunday morning, after the Super Falcons clinched their 10th TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title.

The Super Falcons defeated Morocco 3–2 in the final match held in Rabat on Saturday night to reach a historic and record-extending tenth African title.

“Nigeria Football Federation, pay the Super Falcons players, now 10-time champions of Africa, the sum of $100 per day as their camp allowance, which is $3,500 per player,” Obayiuwana wrote.

“You are offering to pay in Naira, when you are supposed to pay that allowance in $, during the #TotalEnergiesWAFCON2024. Pay them, immediately! Or else…”

Obayiuwana, who urged the NFF to release the money as directed by Shehu Dikko, chairman of the National Sports Commission, said the team’s share of the tournament’s $1 million prize money was $330,000.

He also revealed that during the tournament, he asked NFF President Ibrahim Gusau to confirm the camp allowance figure, but he received no response.

“The Super Falcons’ share of the #TotalEnergiesWAFCON2024 $1 million prize money is $330,000. We are watching you, NFF, to ensure you give them their share first, as @NatSportsComm chairman Shehu Dikko has instructed you to do.

“By the way, I asked Ibrahim Musa Gusau, the NFF president, how much this daily camp allowance was, during the tournament. He refused to tell me. Did he think I wouldn’t find out the amount?”

In 2023, FIJ reported how a handful of Super Falcons’ players spoke about the unjust treatment they faced at the hands of the NFF.

The players, who aired their grievances anonymously, complained about financial mismanagement and ill treatment by the country’s football governing body.

“They don’t treat us as if we are here to play for our country; they treat us as if we are slaves,” one of the players said.

The high-achieving Super Falcons are one of the most decorated teams in international women’s football.
