The United Bank for Africa (UBA) has unblocked the account of Nkechi Udum, a Nigerian resident in the United States.
This happened a day after FIJ intervened by writing to the bank.
UBA had locked Udum’s account, containing about N800,000, in May, stating that she needed a Bank Verification Number (BVN). Udum, who had been using the account since 2005, was surprised by the sudden request for a BVN.
She told FIJ that her account should have all the necessary information, as she had provided it to the bank in past engagements. Despite providing the BVN, Udum’s account remained blocked.

After the BVN episode, UBA further requested Udum’s signature, which she provided. Still, her account was not unblocked. Udum consistently wrote and called the bank to resolve the issue but to no avail.

Udum, at a point, attributed the bank’s perceived non-chalance to her diasporan status. She said if she were present in Nigeria, the bank would have unlocked her account. Udum was particularly concerned because her children in Nigeria depended on the account for funds.
“They called me like four times. They have taken my pictures and signatures more than four times. I exchanged more than 50 emails with UBA. They first said my signature was different. I used my initials; they said they wouldn’t accept initials. I did a complete change of signature and unfreezed my account,” she said.
“They sent me a mail on the 8th of July, saying they’d get back to me on or before the 10th. I sent them an email when they failed to get back. They apologised and said they’d get back on the 14th. I sent them an email on the 14th. They replied again and said on the 18th.
“Precious, Edith, Emmanuel and Demola have called me. They keep telling me they are sorry. Is it ‘sorry’ that my children in Nigeria will eat? They did video calls with me four times.”

Upon hearing Udum’s complaints, FIJ wrote to the United Bank for Africa on July 16, requesting that they look into the matter and resolve it. The bank responded with a request for further details about Udum and a promise to investigate and resolve her situation.
Udum reached out on July 17 to notify FIJ that her account had been unlocked.
“My brother, thank you very much. UBA has unlocked my account today,” Udum said in gratitude.
