When Promise Adura (real name withheld), an Ogun State resident, reached out to Uwa’s Haven, an Instagram vendor, just a few days after his 18th birthday in 2023, it never crossed his mind that he would be scammed.
One year, two months and 12 days after he paid N17,500 to Uwa’s Haven for a pair of jeans, including the delivery fee, the vendor has neither delivered the item nor refunded him.
Adura told FIJ that he stumbled on Uwa’s Haven Instagram page on May 7 and decided to reach out after seeing a pair of jeans that caught his fancy.
He would then pay N15,000 on May 8 for the pair of jeans and N2,500 for the delivery fee from Lagos to Ogun State. FIJ also learned that the OPay account number the money was transferred into bore the name Blessing Osaremen Osazuwa, while a Truecaller search of the vendor’s WhatsApp number showed ‘Blessing Osaz’.

The payment receipt
“My parents gave me part of the money I used to pay for the jeans. I was preparing for church that Sunday when I first contacted her. As I saw the baggy jeans she posted, I messaged her but could not continue chatting because I was preparing for church,” said Adura.
“When I returned from church, I saw that her Instagram page was disabled. Then I sent a message to the WhatsApp number on her profile and even sympathised with her on the loss of her Instagram account because she said Instagram kept disabling her account.”

FIJ learned that after receiving the payment, the vendor promised Adura delivery within two days. However, the delivery never happened, as the vendor later claimed to be sick.
“On May 10, when I sent her a WhatsApp message to ask about the delivery, she sent a hospital picture and a voice note to say she was sick. I was sympathetic and felt sorry for her. I felt I would wait until she was better,” said Adura.
“At some point, when she kept posting stuff on her status despite claiming to be sick, I had to ask her to return the money if she no longer had the jeans. I was like, ‘How can you be sick but you keep posting?’ I messaged her anytime she posted, but she kept assuring me that she would send it once she was okay.
“That’s how when she’s okay turned into days, and then months and now more than a year. I have been sending her messages on WhatsApp since that time and even this year, but most of my messages are ignored.”

When contacted via WhatsApp on Thursday, the vendor refused to respond to FIJ’s inquiry on the incident.
One minute after our reporter asked if the owner of the phone number was Uwa’s Haven, there was a response in the affirmative. When our reporter further asked if they still sold clothes on Instagram, the response was, “Nop. My account got disabled. I have tried several, so for now, [I] am not. Just focusing on my studies.”

However, the moment the reporter sent a message to know why both the delivery and refund had been withheld since last year, there was silence.
Even though the phone number was called twice via WhatsApp and it rang, the vendor refused to answer.
