On of the most urgent human rights issues in Nigeria is human trafficking.

The 2024 Trafficking in Persons Report by the US Department of State puts Nigeria in Tier 2, as the country is yet to meet the minimum standards to eliminate trafficking.

Nigeria has been on Tier 2 since 2011 when it was on Tier 1 (having met the minimum standards at the time).

As at 2024, the Nigerian government reported initiating investigations of 698 cases, including 333 sex trafficking cases, 172 labour trafficking cases and 193 cases of unsuspected forms of trafficking.

Libya remains one of the most notorious destinations for human trafficking from Nigeria, sharing a historical trade route with Edo State that became a human trafficking railroad.

The victims are mostly women. Nigerian women are trafficked to Libya yearly in hopes of a better life, but end up in camps where they are treated inhumanely, and sold for various forms of labour.

When FIJ contacted the National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons and Other Related Matters (NAPTIP) on Tuesday, the agency’s numbers did not connect.

NAPTIP responded to the email FIJ sent on Tuesday. It acknowledged the email and stated that action was being taken on the matter.
